Salon Archive

Archival Jean Paul Gaultier, Vivienne Westwood & John Galliano. Located inside the Nicholas Building.

“I started collecting at a very young age. Funnily enough, I often say around 10 years old. I bought my first Jean Paul Gaultier bag on eBay, and that piece really unearthed something, an almost obsessive need to acquire more and piece together a broader understanding. Especially the rarest. In my teens, that interest expanded into John Galliano and Vivienne Westwood. Studying fashion history has always been my main focus, and collecting became my practice, a guiding force in how I learn and engage with it", says the owner, Daniel Cumbo.

Salon Archive is an extension of his collecting. At its core, Salon Archive exists for collectors and fashion enthusiasts. People interested in fostering, learning, researching, and exploring fashion on a deeper level.

American Vintage Clothing

Probably the largest collection of imported American vintage clothing in Melbourne, with over 7000 items on display.

“A visual art work in progress, from the original 40s and 50s Levi’s, Lee and Wrangler advertising banners that adorn the bluestone walls to the celebrity denim hand painted artwork jeans such as Gene Simmons jeans from Kiss, and the longest Levi jeans in Australia, offering a special glimpse into the world of the rare and famous”, describes their website and is not exaggerating a one bit!

The store specializes in Levi, Lee, Wrangler denim jackets, Levi 501 jeans, Levi and Lee women’s 80s and 90s hi-waisted jeans, denim shorts and denim overalls, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger, printed crew sweats, cowboy boots, motorcycle boots, and made in England Dr Martens, with over 500 boots on display.

Fox on the Run Vintage

Fox on the Run Vintage leans heavily into 80s and 90s vintage – a lot of denim, grunge, and classic pieces, along with those harder-to-find everyday staples that people actually want to wear.

There’s always a strong edit of vintage denim, alongside worn-in tees, jackets, knits, and pieces that feel a bit rock-and-roll but still timeless.

“I try to strike that balance between statement and wearable. Every piece that comes through the store is carefully handled by me – mended, repaired, and laundered to bring it back to life. As I see it, vintage isn’t just found – it’s restored”, the owner, Meghan, told us.

Opera

A gem of a store that stocks designer and vintage clothes from the 70s to the early 2000s.

The two co-founders, Pip Lennon and Netta Talmi, moved into the building, and soon they had a vintage store downstairs. The owners have a great eye for spotting anything that is exceptional, great quality, or just plain fun.

We loved the quirky mannequins in the window, the store decor, and Parisian chic vibes mixed with Melbourne's uniqueness.

Bruce

The consignment store Bruce was established in 2009, but its roots lie in the founder’s earlier career in fashion design and vintage buying in New York.

After relocating to Melbourne and finding a gap in the local landscape, Bruce was created as a response. What began as a small retail space has evolved into a flagship in Clifton Hill, alongside a second store in Hobart.

“The selection is a mix of contemporary and vintage, with pieces chosen for how they wear and endure over time“, says Lucy, the head buyer of the store.

Outerwear, knitwear, and structured separates are a constant, alongside dresses and accessories that move easily between everyday and occasion. Designers you can regularly see on the racks are Dries Van Noten, Issey Miyake, Comme des Garçons, Max Mara, Rundholz, and Isabel Marant.

South Yarra

Stupid Vintage

A huge Y2K department store housed in a graffiti-covered two-story building. There are 30 independent sellers selling vintage and some locally made fashion.

It all started when the founders, Warwick & Georgia, accidentally started a thrift market, which eventually developed into a permanent location.

“We both worked in vintage after we left school, and noticed a shift in the generations' taste and what people are after; there was an obvious need for refinement. We wanted to create a store that felt modern and current, rusty antiques are not in hot demand anymore, and so it only felt natural and a reflection of ourselves, and still does”, the founders told us.
