Five Trends to Shop Secondhand This Spring
A new season means new outfit ideas. We put together what’s coming up this spring, and how to do it with secondhand!
Fashion is about to get more powerful and practical this season. On the runways, we saw new kinds of tailoring, new kinds of office and workwear, and lots of outdoor influences. This spring we will see more than florals as all kinds of leopard prints and plaids are also trending.
We checked the main fashion media’s trend predictions and chose five trends you can easily shop secondhand. We recommend shopping your own closet first – check what you already own before buying new, even if it was secondhand.
The Pantone Color of The Year
Pantone’s 2025 Color of the Year, Mocha Mousse, might feel a bit dull at first glance. It is not brown, not beige, not gray, but something in between. But position the “mocha” color next to vibrant colors or pastel hues, and you suddenly have super interesting color combinations. The mocha browns go with many colors and can therefore be one of your wardrobe’s building blocks.
“Soft browns have a timeless allure that pack so much versatility,” notes Alexis Bennett Parker, Elle’s commerce content lead. “I particularly like to use them as anchors in my closet to get me out of my all-black ruts.”
Barrel Bags
Last year we saw the small and sleek shoulder bags come back but now we have a new exciting contender on the horizon: 90s and y2k inspired barrel bags.
“It’s a true testament to the staying power of elegant dressing, and I’ll even go so far as to say this wave of barrel bags stands to eclipse sleek shoulder bags”, says Anna Laplaca on Who What Wear. On the runway, brands like Prada, Jil Sander, and The Row showed some interesting cylindrical bag options.
On the secondhand market, Michael Kors, Kate Spade, and Juicy Couture have some cute and great barrel bags.
Superior Suiting
Suits for all genders alike will be huge this year. On the runways, “Stella McCartney went 80s oversize, Tory Burch introduced a collarless, belted, and wrapped silhouette, and Blazy showed an almost cartoonishly oversize take at Bottega”, described Madeline Fass and Talia Abbas in Vogue.
Liana Satenstein calls this reality dressing – we are back to office, and working.
To translate this into thrifting = anything goes! Depending on your own taste, go for 80s slouchy versions, 90s collarless blazers, or y2k pinstripes. Luckily you have all the styles to choose from when you shop secondhand.
Big Belt Buckles
The belts returned big time last year so it is only logical that we are now getting obsessed with belt buckles.
“...2025 will see the return of the XL buckle—somewhere between Phoebe Philo’s Celine and a low rodeo hip belt a la Britney Spears in the early 2000s”, says Miguel Enamorado, Accessories Director of Harper’s Bazaar.
We say: the weirder the better. Look for huge statement belts, weird and wonderful decorations, and truly unique embellishments.
Sporty Accents
“...athleticwear designed for versatility becomes relevant, driving demand for pieces that seamlessly transition from workouts to daily life,” predicts Noémie Voyer, fashion lead at trend analytics platform Heuritech in Elle USA.
One item that embodies this trend: bike shorts. We have already witnessed the comeback of capri length pants and now the legs are getting even shorter. I love the practicality of the bike shorts: wear them under a mini skirt or dress to make it more suitable for office or create eccentric layered looks with them!
