A new year is a great opportunity to revamp our styles and outfits – but not necessarily by shopping new but re-finding and re-wearing the things that we already own, borrowing and swapping from friends, and buying used, if we really want and need a new item.

Luckily, many of the 2023’s hip and hot styles including ballet inspired outfits, preppy influences, bows, big sneakers, and pretty much anything in the sports category are coming with us into the new year. We chose five trends that are easy to shop secondhand and build with items that you might already own.

Peach Everything

Every year, Pantone chooses their color of the year. In 2024 it is going to be “peach fuzz” which the company describes as a velvety and gentle tone, communicating ’feeling of kindness and tenderness, communicating a message of caring and sharing, community and collaboration’.

While the whole color of the year is just another marketing tactic trying to convince us to shop more, we can just use this as a style inspiration: Check out your wardrobe to see if you have any 80s peach colored items, and pair them with something contemporary or classic. We love to see peach combined with dark browns or with blue denim!

Ugly Big Sneakers

The daddy sneaker trend is not over yet – instead it is just going to grow! On December 2nd Balenciaga presented their fall 2024 collection in Los Angeles, CA, and probably the biggest sneaker in history was introduced: the 10XL Sneaker. It has highly exaggerated and distorted proportions and is most likely going to be one of the most wanted shoes of the season. Look for similar crazy looking secondhand shoes by searching “ugly” or “daddy” sneakers and find a pair that no one else has!

Ballet Core

Be the ballet star of your own life, and embrace the most girly trend of the season, ballet core. Comfortable and cute at the same time, ballet core means fuzzy wrap knit tops, leg warmers, bodysuits, ballet flats, and lots and lots of bows! Get inspired by the runway shows of Rodarte, Miu Miu, and Maison Margiela.

Sporty Streetwear

Sportswear continues to be popular – Adidas Samba shoes, colorful sport jerseys, and classic baseball hats. If the gorpcore was the trend of 2023, now sportswear seems to be more colorful and more y2k influenced. We love this trend because it is casual, suits all, and is easy to shop secondhand. And as there are plenty of 90s and y2k sports items on the market, the prices are not too crazy. Pro tip: Don’t be afraid to borrow from the men’s section on this one.

Dark Academia

How would your ideal academy professor dress up? Then spice the style up with some gothic and grunge influences. That kind of summarizes the current Dark Academia trend. The trend emerged on Tumblr already in 2015, inspired largely by the Harry Potter fans. During the pandemic and the school closures the trend grew stronger again, and now we are seeing its influence on clothing styles again. Think browns and blacks, plaids, pleated mini skirts, suit vests, loafer shoes.
