Elsa Peretti
Elsa Peretti is a pioneering figure in jewelry design. Peretti’s first piece of jewelry was a prototype for a two-inch sterling-silver bud vase, attached to a leather thong. It was inspired by a silver vase she had spotted at a flea market. After worn by one of fashion designer Giorgio di Sant’ Angelo’s models, it was an instant hit.
In 1971, Peretti began designing for Tiffany using mostly silver which was rebellious at the time. Silver was considered a too common material for jewelry, but Peretti made it look sensual and desirable. She was always inspired by natural shapes. Some of her most-known jewelry comes in the shape of hearts, starfish, and teardrops.
