Recently, we published our guide to NYC vintage showrooms, and here comes the much-anticipated part two, a guide to the equivalents in the Los Angeles area.

Showrooms are a more intimate and personal way to shop vintage – suitable for anyone who wants more time, space, and privacy when vintage shopping. Usually, showrooms operate by appointment only, but they can also have open days when anyone can visit without a prior booking.

Utilitarian & Workwear

American Reboot

American Reboot’s inventory ranges from the 1800s to 1990s, focusing on denim and workwear. That being said, you can still find anything from a 1930s tee to a Jean Paul Gaultier blazer and a pair of frog skin trousers from WWII here.

“We’re always finding new things that excite us, and we enjoy having rarer pieces we’ve never seen before. We have everything from folk art, pieces of old advertising, and antique quilts to cater to those searching for homewares.”

Our customer service and attention to detail is what sets us apart from most. We communicate thoroughly with our buyers to make sure they’re comfortable and relaxed the minute they show up – even going so far as to ask what their favorite drink is. We really strive to get to know our customers on a personal level, and many of them have turned into good friends over the years.

Our advice would be to make an appointment via our Instagram and be prepared to have a relaxed and fun experience. We want everyone who comes by to have access to learning about vintage and the history behind the garment. A lot of times, people walk in and are immediately attracted to the large amount of vintage archive books we have on display. At the end of the day, we want everyone to feel welcome and enjoy themselves, whether it’s your first time looking for a pair of 80s 501s or a 1920s denim jacket.

Casual & Colorful

Normal Avenue Vintage

This showroom specializes in casual menswear but there is also a small section dedicated to womenswear. Items are mostly from the 50s to the 90s: hippie, mod, surf, prep, mid-century, some tailoring, and leather shoes. A fair amount of denim and a bunch of t-shirts, too – a bit of everything, really.

“My approach to vintage is eclectic, offbeat, and not fixated on any particular era. I look for the ’good stuff’ from every decade. I’m drawn to the eye-catching stuff: patchwork, colorful, fun prints, and interesting design details. I think what makes me a bit different from other dealers is that I’ve also bought and sold modern and vintage designer for about a dozen years, so that experience influences my approach to vintage as a whole. I’ve got a packed rack of 90s and Y2K designer like Matsuda, Yohji, CDG, Dirk Bikkembergs, Katharine Hammett, Paul Smith etc… even a bunch of modern and vintage Ralph Lauren.”

Glen hopes to maintain an unpredictability in his curation, the “you never know what you’re going to find” element that drew her to vintage in the first place.

The studio space is in Glendale bordering Atwater Village. The space is shared with two other vintage womenswear dealers, so there is a ton to look through.

We Move Vintage

A range of items from the 60s-y2k: clothing, accessories, and shoes. The focus is on pieces with interesting shapes, patterns, and textures. There are also always some designer gems from brands like Moschino, Escada, Missoni, etc, and some upcycled/reworked pieces.

The owner, Heather Tomimitsu, is always looking for new items, so the inventory changes constantly.

“I think that every showroom has something special to offer. I have a background in fashion design and cater to many people in the industry including designers and stylists. In addition to my inventory, I have numerous fashion resource/trend books for inspiration. I am constantly researching, looking, and gathering inspiration for my customers.”

Feminine & Bohemian

The Honey House

The vintage collective run by Madly Vintage and Kikos Kloset carries beachy-bohemian and feminine pieces dating from 1900-2000. The founders love vintage California style and flattering feminine cuts and specialize in resort and occasion wear, too. Madly Vintage always has a bridal collection available at the shop – unique looks that are perfect for all bridal events. Both Madly Vintage and Kikos Kloset rework many of their vintage pieces and even offer to rework your vintage when purchased at The Honey House.

The duo also takes private appointments with designers and costume designers and hosts private shopping nights and spring/summer parties and events.

The showroom is located on the corner of Abbot Kinney and Venice Blvd, tucked away in a little white bungalow on Venice Beach. Check their Instagram for “open house” days, one day a week when you don’t need an appointment.

Festive

The Front Room

The founder of The Front Room Lauren Frost is an actor, therefore a touch dramatic, with a flair for glamor. Frost believes if all the world’s a stage, we must dress our part – sustainably.

“My favorite pieces in the collection are special occasion, because life is too short not to wear the damn dress! As much as I’m drawn to the drama (lurex, prints, beading, chiffon...) I don’t want anyone feeling like wearing vintage is wearing a costume. I like to source looks that fit into a modern lifestyle, so think less kitchy, more Bob Mackie meets Carrie Bradshaw”, Lauren explains.

The showroom is named after the Chicago slang “Frunchroom", meaning the front room of the house, overlooking the street, where the family’s best furniture (usually covered in plastic) lives, it’s the room that is only used for entertaining.

“I don’t want specialty vintage to feel like it’s never to be taken out of the closet. You don’t need the occasion, you are the occasion. I hope I’ve created a space where people feel comfortable, taking the stuffiness out of the style stuff. I like to entertain.”

Lauren also hosts monthly Sip’n Shop events as an open house with sparkling bevies.
