We reached out to four newcomers to hear their stories. Check them out next time you go shopping in NYC, and remember that you can always find all the city’s stores listed on our NYC Vintage Map.

“I’ve been an avid vintage collector since high school. When I first moved to New York I interned for a few indie fashion magazines but it never felt like the best fit. After working in the hospitality industry for way too long, I realized I needed to make a change and wanted to get back to doing something clothing-related. I began Platonic Love Vintage in 2021 as a web-based business but by 2022 I’d started selling at various pop-up markets (Hester Street Fair, Dumbo & Chelsea Flea, Regeneration, etc.).
When I started selling at the markets, I had only my husband to help me load in and out. On top of that, my inventory had grown to take over my daughter’s room. At that point I realized I needed to find my own space. I took the plunge and moved into my current shop in late February. My husband is glad he doesn’t have to move me every weekend and my daughter is happy to have her room back. I love the space and try to make it more colorful every day!
I spent a long time looking for the right location. I wanted to be able to open a place within walking distance of my apartment and close to the train. I couldn’t afford the price of rent on any of the major streets so I was on the hunt for a spot that was a little off the beaten path but still had foot traffic (tall order I know). So when this location directly across the street from Pratt Institute opened up, I immediately jumped at the chance.
I gravitate towards items from the 40s through the 90s. I’ve had many repeat customers come in for long and short-sleeve novelty button-down shirts and terrycloth tops. I always carry bright-colored maxi skirts, rompers and jumpsuits, 70s novelty print anything, and matching top and bottom sets.
I consciously try to keep my prices relatively low. Prices start at $8 for some special vintage kid’s items, $15–$30 for tops/shorts/skirts, and 50s/60s/70s cocktail dresses, and evening gowns starting at $25 but going for as much as $200+.
Color is the ultimate rebellion. I aim to blast you with color when you enter the door. I want people to feel comfortable wearing color and patterns again.“

“I opened my first brick and mortar in New Jersey in 2020 and moved to the mean streets of Soho in November 2023. First we were selling contemporary clothing only, but expanded into vintage after realizing that the price point of contemporary can sometimes be very expensive, while the quality of vintage is just as good and more affordable.
I partnered with five vintage dealers to stock with us: Samuel Falzone, Fru Vintage, Ebreo Vintage, Lobby Boy Vintage, and Viva Showroom. It mostly happened through word of mouth. They heard about the shop and introduced themselves – it can be that simple sometimes. Also, I have to give a shout-out to Samuel Falzone, whose reworked vintage sneakers, golf shoes, and Nike cleats we carry.
We carry a very wide range of vintage as each of our dealers brings a different approach. We have anything from vintage single stitch Americana tees to designer to totally weird and obscure.
Our tees and pants run around $30-$70, sweaters around $60–100, and designer archival pieces anywhere from $100–$250.
I love stocking vintage because I appreciate historical design and versatility. There’s so much good vintage clothing out there. We especially like merchandise for very obscure businesses or events.
I love the charm and neighborhood of the Soho village, and all the mom and pop shops here. It has a community feel and rich history of retail. NYC was always the goal, but I felt like New Jersey was a great place to get started. I was familiar with New Jersey as my Mom had a clothing boutique there for several years.
Everything about Soho is different from New Jersey. The clientele is different, dare I say younger, still in a mode of self-discovery and willing to try new styles. A lot of our pieces are unique, which pushes most people out of their comfort zone.
In addition to the vintage, we carry a wide array of contemporary menswear from independent designers. I especially like to tout the local designers such as Silphium, Liv Ryan, Carter Young, and Small Talk. We like to think everything we curate is special and elevated – conversation pieces only. We also have an in-house line called Sonny which references some of my favorite vintage pieces. I figured if I loved it, someone else has to love it too, and I was right.”

“The owner, Angel Ramirez, first opened a buy-and-sell store called Angels On Avenue A, and in May, we opened Angels Boutique next door. It felt like East Village lacked this kind of fashion-girlie destination, and we keep hearing people say,’ We’ve needed a store like this on Avenue A’ – this makes us really happy.
Angels Boutique essentially acts as the sister shop to Angels on A, but we also feel there are angelic happenings when you find a totally magical vintage dress that fits you perfectly. I love the idea of vintage objects and clothing being angels themselves, finding their way on a long journey through time to us.
Our customers love the overlap of art and fashion, and seek out unique statement pieces to build out their wardrobe. Angels Boutique is for the girlies who crave clothes that excite and enchant them, transcending brands and labels – the pieces just all have a certain ethereal, sleek, sexy, or dreamy magic to them.
We are freaks for clothing made with interesting textiles, rhinestones, sequins, and iridescence, mostly from the 90s-2000s. Some call it mermaid-y, princess-y, Sailor Moon-y... we love the space where vintage fantasy meets futuristic fashion. The shop's baseline offerings are romantic dresses, vintage lingerie, statement pants, delicate silk tops, and my own hand-painted denim, dresses, and vintage purses. One of our core vendors is vintage seller Natacha Ruiz of @40korless.tv, who presents an evolving collection from her archive with one-of-a-kind finds like a deadstock gem-encrusted 90s Roberto Cavalli purse and Custo Barcelona neon-printed fleece dress.
We want to always stock some iridescent Jessica McClintock Gunne Sax prom pieces, the perfect silk dress for attending a wedding in Italy, and hot mini skirts. We will also always have an extensive selection of vintage jewelry and 1/1 pearl pieces by Tears Drop, as well as handmade jeweled crosses and oversized pendants by Eventyrverden.
Our prices range from $20 for costume jewelry treasures to $348 for a 2000s John Galliano dress. On average, our vintage, 2000s, and custom-painted dresses range from $98 to $228, and tops are $68 to $138. We know New Yorkers love to mix high and low, so carrying a range of pieces that allow for experimentation and fluidity feels aligned.
We designed the shop to heighten people’s senses as soon as they walk in, maybe even transport them to a new dimension. We wanted to build a world that didn’t feel like anything we had ever seen and felt before, where you can really wander and appreciate the clothing and all the artistic touches.”

“We had coffee one day in January of 2023, and that February, we held our first pop-up, which had a crazy turnout. We did another one the next month which had an even bigger turnout. We ended up agreeing to co-sign on a studio together. In September 2024 we opened the store front in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
You’ll find a mix of timeless 90s minimalism and chic designer y2k finds from Italy. It’s a place to come make your Pinterest board a reality. We try to source something for everyone, and the inventory is size inclusive. At our space, you can always find a fabulous elevated basics in natural fibers: silk button-ups, cashmere tees and tanks, and the perfect pair of trousers.
Our dream is that people can come into the shop to find a specialty dress they may wear to a wedding and their go-to top to wear to the office. At the end of the day, we want to help you build your wardrobe with secondhand and vintage pieces.
We try to keep most of the inventory as accessible as possible and do not want to price people out of vintage and secondhand. So most items are between $30-$75 with nicer leather jackets up to $150 and some stunning finds sourced in Italy between $65-$125.
One thing we hear over and over from our customers is that they feel comfortable when shopping here. We’ve made it feel like you’re shopping in your bestie’s closet and are playing dress up in the living room. This is how shopping should be: fun and creative! Nothing brings us greater joy than having regulars and seeing people connect and become friends through the store. Plus, we throw some really fun parties.”
